Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Seven (7) years of full-time demonstrated experience in fundraising leadership. Five (5) years of full-time experience in a management role. Proven track record in assessing, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding high-level gifts. Budget management experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Additional years (8+) of full-time demonstrated experience in fundraising leadership. Major gift experience within a large public research university and/or not-for-profit organization. Experience fundraising during a campaign and developing campaign materials and strategies. Experience leading a large, diverse advancement team.

Brief Description of Duties:
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), the Assistant Vice President will provide strategic leadership on all matters related to planning and executing the University's comprehensive campaign that will launch in fall of 2024 as well as coach and support the central development teams of Gift Planning, Corporate Relations, and Foundation Relations The incumbent should have proven prioritization and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously. They should exhibit leadership skills with the ability to work independently, make decisions and resolve issues working in a deadline-driven environment. The AVP will help lead the planning and execution of the public phase of the campaign and will be a critical leader involved in the coordination of volunteer and donor engagement and advancement communications strategies relative to the campaign. The AVP holds a key role responsible for orchestrating the processes, metrics, and relationships that will lead to a successful and comprehensive campaign and positioning Stony Brook well for future advancement success. The position requires a balance of creativity and interpersonal skills, project management and process-oriented functions, as well as a deep understanding of development--including major and principal gift efforts--helping lead a $1B+ campaign. Through the central teams, the AVP will have direct responsibility to support the fundraising efforts of all schools and units on both East and West Campuses. Under the direction of the CDO, the AVP for Central Teams and Campaign Planning will oversee, develop and administer policies and practices to provide the highest level of service to the schools, colleges and units, as well as to be the primary coordinator of all efforts that will support the comprehensive campaign. The AVP is responsible for building a staffing plan, including the recruitment of new fundraising professionals, and is responsible for leading and expanding the donor-centric advancement program within the Central Teams. The AVP is also responsible for managing a portfolio of prospective philanthropic donors. They will develop fundraising strategies, which include the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift donors. They will have demonstrated success in leading teams and provide guidance and mentoring to both development staff and faculty (or physicians) on fundraising principles and practices. The incumbent will be responsible for the development of policies for Advancement in partnership with the Vice President and Chief Development Officer. This collaborative effort is aimed at fostering strategic growth, enhancing donor engagement, and ensuring the effective stewardship of resources to advance our organization's mission and impact.

  • Collaborate with the CDO, as well as senior advancement team members, to design and execute a fully coordinated comprehensive campaign for the University that will launch in fall of 2024. This will include recruiting, supporting and stewarding a Campaign Council composed of the University's very best donors. Serve as primary Council manager and volunteer liaison. Lead and develop all necessary materials for committee meetings. Develop and execute the campaign schedule. Oversee monthly assignments and follow-up actions regarding all campaign related activities with campaign leaders and donors. Track actionable items provide follow-up, clarification, and support on actionable items.
  • Provide creative and strategic leadership in all matters related to the fundraising goals and successes of the central teams. Provide vision and direction to grow and manage a high-performing development program.
  • Work collaboratively and strategically on other high-priority needs and projects in University Advancement that further the division's ability to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward the university's best prospects and donors.
  • Lead in the preparation of all development related information and reports needed by the President, VP, CDO, Boards or other senior officials, including but not limited to campaign reports, development plans and fundraising progress and other forecasts. Work collaboratively with members of the administrative leadership team to create, disseminate and apply appropriate gift processing, accounting and reporting policies.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a Management Confidential position. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
